     As I try to explain the principle of Johrei, what makes it difficult for me is the fact that for the general public, who have received a modern education it is hard to understand what I wish to convey. I know this cannot be helped, since today’s education is based solely on a materialistic way of thinking.
     Now, as we look upon the achievements of the founders of various religions through philology and tradition, we almost always find that miracles have been worked. This is especially true of greater religions. The general public in those days when civilization was not very well advanced could accept a religion only by seeing miracles and experiencing benefits. They did not demand deeper philosophies or clear reasoning theories. Most regrettable was the fact that Jesus, who worked the greatest number of miracles did not live for a longer time. If he had not died for the Atonement we can imagine how many more individuals he would have saved while on earth and how much more quickly his teachings would have spread. We can imagine this even today. His life, however had to be ended because in those days the power of Satan was quit strong, seemingly stronger than that of God. This was an undeniable fact. The power of Satan seemed to have superseded the power of God because of the state of the spiritual realm; that is, spiritually the time was premature. Now that the time has ripened the turning point has arrived, and Satan has become weaker day by day and month by month. I have come to know this clearly through revelation.
     Through revelation also I have become aware of the meaning of all the phenomena which have been enigmas up to now, and through this I am going to explain the difference between the right and wrong of things, trace and investigate the origin of good and evil, and correct the mistakes humanity has hitherto made. Because civilization has long been one-sided, tilted toward the material, I am going to help make spiritual civilization advance by long strides and create an ideal world, which we call paradise on earth.
     In connection with this I am going to explain why our members are having such amazing results through Johrei—part of the principle of Johrei.
     As stated, people today are far more advanced intellectually than those who lived in an uncivilized age and they cannot be satisfied solely with actual miracles they experience; they do not have total trust in them. They cannot be convinced unless what they experience or see is verified by firm logical teachings. I believe the reason for today’s decline of many of the old orthodox religions lies partly in the fact that they deny materialistic civilization, giving no material benefits to their members.
     Now, I am going to explain the fundamental truth of Johrei, which is an integral part of the miracles worked through our members. Channels hold their hands toward sick people from a position which is a few feet away from the recipients. By their doing so, even a serious condition of illness becomes lighter very quickly, and an excruciating pain is lessened in a short time or is even completely eradicated. Such an action can be called nothing other than a miracle. Often a seriously ill person who has been pronounced hopeless by doctors is healed miraculously through the Johrei given by a member who has not had any medical training whatsoever, perhaps by a member who joined us only a few months ago. There are really too many such experiences to enumerate. It is indeed a great matter which is beyond reason or explanation from the point of view of modern materialistic thinkers.
     Medical science is the result of hard study and training for hundreds and thousands of years by excellent scholars in many countries all over the world. The well-prepared, intricate methods of treatment which they developed are worthy of admiration. Doctors earn their degrees only after many years of study, training and research work, which costs them huge amounts of money. Yet, ailments which these real experts can do nothing about are healed by the Johrei given by an ordinary person without any medical training! It is no exaggeration to call this the miracle of the century. It is indeed a fact transcending reason. It is understandable that it is not only hard for those who hear about the results of Johrei to accept them but that it is easy for them to look upon Johrei as superstition or sometimes mental illness. This is probably an unprecedented idea.
     Such a declaration of intent as that of our church, “construction of a world free from disease, poverty and conflict,” would sound like boasting and could not be said if there were no real conviction. If such a statement were given without real power it would be an attempt to deceive the world and would constitute an unforgivable sin. To be honest, the aforesaid “miracles” are not miracles from our point of view. They are based on solid ground, with a scientific explanation to support them; they appear for a definite reason. I am going to write about this in detail as much as I can.

     Now, I am going to go into the principle of Johrei. But before that there is something you should know as a premise, so I will write about it first.
     To begin with, all things in the world are composed of not only material but also of spiritual parts. A human being is no exception, being composed of both a spiritual body and a physical body. If I may roughly classify, the spiritual part is the essence of the sun and the physical part is the essence of the moon and the earth. To make this plainer, the spiritual is fire, the positive, the male, the front, the vertical, and the day; the physical is water, the negative, the female, the back, the horizontal, and the night. Scientists, however, work only on the physical section as their object without recognizing the existence of the spiritual. They are totally mistaken on this point. The reason is that if a human being were nothing but a physical body with no spirit he would be only a material being, an inorganic thing like a piece of wood or stone; there could be no life, no spiritual activity. The fact that scientists have not understood such a simple truth has been the cause of their fundamental error.
     In like fashion, the thinking of scientists for a long time was that there was only atmosphere, nothing else in space above the earth. Far from this being so, there are innumerable and varied invisible elements besides atmosphere—in fact, how many there are is still unknown; science simply has not yet advanced enough to discover more of them.
     Fortunately, through revelation I have come to realize the existence of the greatest of these, the invisible spiritual element and its true nature. I have named this realization spiritual science. With this discovery for momentum, the new age free from all diseases—from the diseases which have so long been the greatest cause of human misery—will begin. All the questions concerning ailments which have been unanswered up to now have been answered. Therefore, we may say that the time has come when research work concerning the diseases we have today has become unnecessary.
     Now, I will clarify the true cause of the occurrence of disease. As stated before, a human being is made up of two parts, spiritual and physical. The fact that a human being is alive and moving around means his spirit and body are attached inseparably, with the spirit directing the flesh. The spiritual body has the same form as the physical body. In the center of the spiritual body is the mind and in the center of that mind is the soul. These three manifest themselves in action as the will and the consciousness. It is this invisible will and consciousness which governs the physical body. So, the spiritual body has precedence over the physical body. This is what we call the law of the spiritual preceding the physical.
     To give a simple example, when a human being moves his limbs, they do not move of their own accord but follow the direction given by the will of the person. The same is true of the eyes, nose, mouth and all other parts of the body. This principle applies to all diseases, also. To make this point easy to understand, let me speak about boils, which so many people have had.
     A boil starts from a small protuberance on the surface of the skin. It gradually swells, becomes bigger and bigger, turns reddish, is sometimes accompanied by fever, and normally the person feels some pain or itching in that spot. This phenomenon occurs when a purifying activity develops in the body to dissolve some of the toxins by natural physiological action. The toxins then gather in that one spot and become liquefied by fever to make elimination easy. This is a natural action to improve health. At this point Nature works to make the skin thinner and softer in order to create a hole through which the dissolved toxin can drain out. When a boil turns reddish the toxic blood can be seen through the thin and transparent skin. In a little while a small hole is opened and soon the liquefied impure blood and the pus shoot out and the purification ends.
     The above explains the physical part of the purification. Let me tell you what condition the spiritual body is in at this time. The part of the spiritual body which corresponds to where the boil is on the physical body appears to be in a kind of cloud-like state, with what we call an accumulation of spiritual clouds. The more serious the condition is the more dense are the clouds. They gather on that specific part because of purificatory activity which occurs there. When the purification starts, the clouds all over the spiritual body gather in one spot to be dispelled. This is manifested as an illness. Needless to say this has an inseparable relationship with the physical body.
     According to medical science, a boil is treated by removing the lump of toxin through lancing or incision. This is a big mistake. The reason I say this is because in most cases these treatments are performed before sufficient amounts of the toxic blood and pus have gathered in the spot and so even after the operation toxic blood and pus continue to gather, which often delays the closing up of the wound. Many times people have trouble with the incision of an appendectomy which does not close up for years. The reason for this is the one mentioned above. Therefore, a skilled surgeon waits to perform surgery until the swelling inside is sufficiently “ripe.” In this way the healing is greatly accelerated. If the appendicitis condition is left alone from the beginning without being touched, a small hole forms naturally, and when the swelling is sufficiently ripe the toxic blood and pus are eliminated through it. Then the recuperation is very good and the healing is accomplished in an unbelievably short period of time when compared with surgery. For instance, suppose surgery was performed before the time was right. This would require one month to heal, while a surgery following a ripened condition would require ten days and for a natural healing without surgery only five days would pass before the wound closed up. The only drawback to the last method is the excruciating pain the patient must endure during the time need for toxins to gather and dissolve completely. This is why people generally think surgery is necessary—in order to be freed quickly from the pain.
     With the Johrei treatment, the pain disappears very quickly however severe it may be and the big swelling, even one which has turned quite red, becomes painless and stays that way until all the toxic substance is eliminated, so the one who is experiencing this is really surprised. Let me explain the reason for this strange phenomenon.
     The law of the spiritual preceding the physical, which I have explained before, can be applied not only to the human body but to everything else. The purpose of Johrei is to dispel the spiritual clouds. The Light of Johrei takes away the negative power of the clouds, nullifying them. That is, the clouds lose their power and so they cannot irritate the nerves anymore. This is why the pain disappears.
     I will now go into further explanation of this principle, how Johrei can dispel spiritual clouds.

     Let me first explain the true essence of spiritual clouds. It is the spiritual toxins which germinate in the spirit of water within the human body. These toxins are infinitesimal particles whose physical counterparts cannot even be seen, except under a microscope of perhaps several million magnifications. Later, in a separate article I will explain in detail how these particles germinate. In this article I will only explain the principle of annihilating them, which is possible solely through the Power of the Spirit.
     Johrei is the radioactive energy emitted from a human body. Then, how can the power of Johrei eradicate spiritual clouds or spiritual toxic substances? The element of the radioactive energy of Johrei is the light-wave emitted from kaso or spirit of fire, which is the element of Light. This element is quite opposite to the toxins in the spirit of water. In other words, it is the difference of good and evil.
     The light-waves are composed of infinitesimal particles of Light whose vital power has a wonderful ability to sterilize toxic germs. Then, what is the essence of the light-waves? I will try to explain this. It is nothing other than the radioactive energy from the Divine Spirit, God Himself. This is indeed the source of Johrei which works such numerous miracles, giving material blessings.
     I have known so many of our members who have helped others with Johrei, and non-members who have experienced the benefits of Johrei have been very much impressed and have wished to know the truths of the miraculous healing power. So, I have had a strong desire to explain this for quite awhile, but I could not do so publicly because the time was premature. However, now that the crucial moment for the turning from Night to Day is at hand, I think I have to let you know the truth.
     At this time the method I am using for Johrei is to present each of our members with a piece of paper on which a large calligraphy of the character 光 (Light) is written by me. This works effectively when a member wears it on the chest as an amulet (Omamori). It works because powerful light-waves are emitted from the black ink part of the character “Light” and from the body of the channel these go through the arm, then into the hand and radiate from the palm. We believe the most appropriate distance between the hand and the recipient is from a few feet to about eighteen feet.
     Now, I will explain how the light-waves are emitted from the character “Light” written by me. The Light which radiates from my spiritual body is transmitted and reaches each character of “Light” instantaneously through the spiritual cord. This is just like the traveling of radio-waves in broadcasting. Then, there must be some kind of device in my spiritual body. What can that device be, you may wonder? By learning that any skepticism will disappear.
     In my body, within my abdomen, there is a sphere of Light which is ordinarily about two inches in diameter. Some people have seen it. It is from this sphere of Light that light-waves radiate limitlessly. Then, what is the true source of this sphere of Light? It is the cintamani of Kanzeon Bosatsu in the spiritual world, who sends and supplies the limitless Light. This is what is called the Power of Kannon, also Mysterious Power and sometimes the Power of Mystic Wisdom. The ball held by Nyoirin-Kannon* is the same sphere of Light.

     I must write about the origin of Kanzeon Bosatsu. Of all the many Buddhas only Kanzeon has been called the secret Buddha since ancient days. Here is a deep mystery. Since the time is still premature I cannot reveal the whole of it, but I will make this public as soon as I receive permission from God. However, I am going to write about the part of the mystery which is necessary in explaining the Power of Johrei.
     Of course, Kanzeon has been working actively ever since Buddhism was introduced to Japan. From that time until the recent past, Kanzeon’s saving help was blessing on the spiritual side only. He did answer human beings’ prayers, it is true, but the power of these blessings was not very conspicuous. The reason for this was that the elements of the Light, the combined power of the spirit of fire and that of water lacked the spirit of soil; that is why Kannon’s giving blessings to human beings the power was not sufficient.
     Now, the great turning point in the spiritual world is close at hand, the time which has been called the end of the world in the Bible or often spoken of by Christians as the last judgment day. For this time the strongest power, the absolute power which will save humanity has become urgent. Kannon’s is the combined power, the trinity of fire, water and soil.
     The spiritual power of soil is the element of matter which is represented by the physical body of a human being. When Light is transmitted through a living body the spirit of soil is added and it becomes the trinity power; this is the Power of Kannon. If I may speak more plainly, the element of Light emitted from the ball of cintamani of Kanzeon Bosatsu, when it is transmitted through my body is strengthened as the Power of Kannon, and when this goes through the body of a member it turns into the purifying power we call Johrei.
     I will explain this with an example. From olden days there have been many individuals in Japan who have prayed before a picture or a statue of Kanzeon for the blessing of healing or of protection from a disaster and sometimes their prayers have been answered. Compared with these blessings received from Johrei given by our members are much greater. The reason for the differences is the fact that the light-waves emitted from such pictures or statues consist of two elements only, lacking in the important element of soil which comes from the physical body.
     Let me point out one more reason which concerns the great turning in the spiritual world that is occurring now, as I have repeatedly told you. It started in the middle of June 1931. Before this the spirit of water was the major element in the ether, with only a little of the spirit of fire, but since June 1931 the spirit of fire has gradually been increasing. We must say that for several decades even before that time the change was slowly coming, but the spirit of fire was a much lesser force then.
     Here let me explain about the strength of Light. When the Light is intense it is because it contains much of the element of fire. This is the same as the fact that the more wattage of electricity there is the stronger the heat is.
     I will give you another example. There is a sphere of Light within my abdomen. So, many people tell me my body is much hotter than that of ordinary people. Almost every evening I ask one of my servers to give me a massage, and every one of them says they feel the heat when they do so. Even in winter they have to take off one or two items of clothing. Also, when I am in a room for a while, others who are in the same room begin to remark that they feel very warm. Sometimes I tell them that I can take the place of a stove, and I laugh. After I take a bath I wear an unlined terry cloth yukata and stay in it for an hour or two even in the midst of winter, and I like especially lukewarm baths. This is according to the principle that when water is poured on a fire the heat is increased. In winter a clear, sunny day is colder, according to the same principle.

    *Nyoirin-Kannon: one form of Kannon who is believed to answer all sincere prayers and
    who saves humanity from all misery. He carries a ball of cintamani, called Cintamanicakra
    in Sanskrit, and a ring in his hand.
