“The Story of an Eye Doctor”
Medical Science Short Accounts
This is an account of an episode that happened over a decade ago when I was practicing in Kojimachi. An elderly ophthalmologist who had been the official doctor of a ward school in the city of Tokyo for over thirty years came down with an eye disease and his condition gradually worsened. He had been on the point of going blind, but after a week of Johrei, he recovered completely. He was so happy that he took the introductory course. Asked about the cause of his condition, he said that several months before while in the bath, some soapy foam had gotten into his eyes and it had hurt so much that he had one of his assistants treat him, but the condition showed no signs of improvement. His son was an assistant in the ophthalmology department at the Keio University Hospital and he diligently applied the latest techniques, but the father only got worse. As a doctor he was very ashamed but swallowing his pride, he had come to me for treatment.
Two or three months later, he stopped by the center and I asked him if he were channeling Johrei, and with a face that said “not at all,” he replied, “I am keeping secret from my wife and from my relatives the fact that you healed me and that I took your introductory course, because if it became known to the Medical Association, I would be expelled.” I was simply dumbfounded.
