Great Construction
What I Am (1)
The matters about which I am going to write here are those that most all have neither seen nor heard, so please keep that in mind when reading. Specifically, when I critique myself, I have what could be called another self apart from myself that creates a critique through which my frank unvarnished self appears. Until now, there probably has not been such a peculiar phenomenon. Why do I write about this situation? There is a reason. That reason is that in old or modern times there has not appeared a person as intriguing as I. And, I am intrigued that neither have there been or are there individuals who have observed themselves as much as I. In that regard, I will start with a description of my work. As is well known, that into which I put my utmost efforts is healing the sick.
When the subject of healing the sick is brought up in society nowadays, what is meant of course is medical science. In the West, Hippocrates, from centuries before Christ, is well known as the founder of medical science, and in East Asia, it is said that P’an Ku (also known as the God-King P’an Ku) is said to have created Chinese herbal medicine, but in both cases, medicine was the primary means for healing the sick. In the case of Chinese herbal medicine, hardly any progress has been observed, but in the West, under the influence of material scientific culture, astonishing growth has been accomplished. The varieties of medicines have steadily increased, and beginning with the development of that such as instruments, radiation, aerotherapeutics, physical therapies, the fundamental means for utilizing these physical therapies have come to be autopsy, analysis, microscopy, and experimentation on animals, all rigorously conducted. In either case, the basis for both these fields has been around in history for more two thousand years. In the West, to the accompaniment of the development of material science, medical science made a great leap since the nineteenth century. Chinese herbal medicine could not compete, and as all know its existence at present is barely perceptible.
As a result, the current situation is that not only has Western medicine come to monopolize medical science throughout the world, and that through the conviction that if medical science progresses, the problem of disease will be resolved, all nations encourage this progress. This progress, including the promotion of the education of medical doctors who follow a special course of lessons from elementary school to university, and who after graduation, accrue practical experience, become full-fledged physicians, involves at least more than twenty years and a large expenditure of money which is not an easy path. Criticism of such could not be made if as the result of all this effort was that the techniques that are able to heal human beings were to be had, but something of which even medical doctors are well aware is the fact that that diseases are not healed is most conspicuous. Yes indeed, medical treatment is able to temporarily lessen pain, and it does appear as if the condition has been healed, but as time passes, recurrences will certainly appear. Of course, in surgical procedures, the afflicted functions are removed, so there is no recurrence of the disease, but it is also a fact that other diseases in which the original disease has changed form will break out. It is only natural that medical science undergo a revolution.
But because what I have just explained has not been understood until now, the temporary alleviation of pain was misinterpreted to be the healing process, and because the methods mentioned above were developed and have advanced, the ignorance astonishes. The proof of this ignorance can be seen in the fact that while medical science has been advancing, the number of sick has greatly increased. Therefore, if the situation continues as it has, I can declare that the state of health of humanity will reach a crisis. Above I have exposed the reality of medical science, and it is a great mystery that not even one person has discovered this frightening, deplorable fact. This is itself probably a great mystery of the twentieth century. Into this situation have suddenly appeared my theories, so they are truly an atomic bomb. In other words, the curtain that has kept the world in darkness for such a long while has been torn away, and the brilliant world free of disease will have made one step toward becoming a reality.
Here in front of our eyes the great cataclysm of the collapse of medical science is approaching. Even so, it is not an easy task to awaken those who for so long have so fervently held on to the superstition of medical science. Put in other words, my work is the correction of wrong to right, and as it is the Creator’s divine economy, there is not one point of difficulty. That I was chosen for this task is something that was determined at the time of the creation of the heavens and the earth. For this great task of world salvation, I have been given the necessary wisdom and power. Therefore, I have been taught and have learned thoroughly about medical science, hence from only this much it can be understood that I am an intriguing individual whose likes have not yet appeared on the planet earth.
Thus, as seen through my eye of divine wisdom, there are no words to express how mistaken are the fundamentals of medical science. It is horrifying. I have described this problem in the many essays and books that I have published so I omit that explanation here, but the important point I want to make concerns the method to cure diseases. Regardless of age, sex, or profession, all those who believe in what I teach and who learn the method of healing take a course of several days study. After taking that course, a piece of paper which has the ideogram for “Light” written upon it is presented, that is a focal point. The focal point is put into a small packet and allows the wearer to immediately start to manifest healing power. And, as experience in healing is gained, a focal point that contains the ideograms for “divine light” is presented, and after further advancement, presentation of a focal point with “great divine light.” This is all that is needed to become the possessor of the astonishing healing power which is called Johrei.
Examples of this healing power are contained in the accounts of individuals who have been forsaken by general hospitals and medical doctors and yet who immediately recover. These accounts may not be believable when heard about or read, but as can be seen from the number of reports and letters of appreciation sent by the individuals who themselves recovered, these days I receive from two to three hundred such testimonials in one month and the number is increasing steadily. There are so many we cannot run all of them in World Messianity’s periodicals.
The reason the ideograms inside the focal points are able to manifest such healing power is rather mysterious, so please follow my explanation. To begin, there is a ball of light within my abdomen. This ball is itself of such mystery and subtlety as to be thoroughly inexplicable, but it is a divine receptor used freely and flexibly by the Creator. It is what has been referred to since antiquity as the jewel of Chintamani, the gem of Mani. The power of this jewel has been permitted for use, bestowed upon me as a human being for the first time in humanity’s history. Through the spiritual cord, the light of this ball is transmitted to the focal point of each follower to limitlessly provide light, so there is no change in power no matter how much is increased the number of focal points.
As the preceding shows, the work I do is not religion. My work surpasses religion, something to which a name cannot be given. To describe the circumstances as they are at present, religion only has a role for a certain period. It is only provisional salvation, and has no permanency. Whether it be Shyamuni who taught about the end of Buddhism and the provisionality of this world of dust or Jesus who said the end of the world was coming, their words all refer to the provisionality of religion. The fact that until the present disease could not be healed by religion shows this provisionality. This is obvious when we see that most religions at present have bowed their heads to medical science and constructed hospitals. This proves that the power of religions is below that of material science. Although regretful, the life of existing religions is over, a fact to which humanity should awaken as soon as possible. If this fact is understood to the depths of being, then also should easily be understood the birth of Maitreya, the reappearance of the Christ, and the descent of the Messiah. If not understood, it is because these matters are just too great, that nothing resembling them has appeared in more than two thousand years, and thus humanity has decided that such matters are not possible. Thus have members of humanity fallen into the self-contradiction that they continue to believe in the teachings of one founder and not believe prophecies by others.Chijōtengoku, Issue 47, page 6, April 25, 1953

“Watakushi to Iu Mono (Ichi)” originally appeared in Chijōtengoku, Issue 47, April 25, 1953. In order, “Watakushi to Iu Mono (Ichi)” is the last essay published from the magazine to be included in the anthology Igaku Kankei Goronbun Shū (Collected Essays on Medical Science) that did enjoy a limited circulation (the last essay from the newspaper is dated April 21, 1953). Igaku Kankei Goronbun Shū contains no publication data, but this internal evidence suggests that its editing stopped several months preceding Meishu-sama’s death. Furthermore, since the book lacks publication data, whether the volume had Meishu-sama’s imprimatur or not is unknown, so details concerning this volume are probably impossible to research. Meishu-sama has another essay with the same title that appeared in both newspaper and book form, but the spelling of the title differs so native speakers may differentiate them. The addition of “(1)” in the title of this essay, which also helps to differentiate this essay from the 1949/1950 versions, as well as the introductory paragraph that suggests that Meishu-sama wants to discuss more than just healing, begs the question of whether Meishu-sama was planning further parts. As far as is known, no translation has been published.
