Johrei Is a Scientific Therapy (1)
For quite some time now, my followers have been asked by those receiving Johrei for the first time about its principles. Followers want to be able to explain in simple, easy-to-understand terms, so I will try to provide such here. This is not an unreasonable request since individuals who have received relentless medical treatment for and still not recovered from disease are cured in an abruptly short time and, astonished, want to know why. Even those administering Johrei will almost certainly have had the experience once, but I have not explained this thoroughly, one factor being that until now the time to do so was too soon. I detail the principles here.
The fixed view of the world since ancient times has been that physicians and medicines cure disease, and nowadays because the supremacy of material science reigns, nothing is believed without the imprimatur of science, so Johrei is found difficult understand, and naturally an explanation is desired. In regard to this question, the most essential point that must first be understood is the relationship between medical science and material science. Yes, needless to say, material science may resolve issues in all other fields, but as far as healing is concerned, the same does not hold true. Rather, an extreme misjudgment has been made. That is because human beings and all other apart from human beings differ fundamentally. I will detail those differences now.
Of all in the universe, human beings are the creatures of the highest level, a fact so mystical and mysterious that it is immeasurable with human wisdom. Material science, however, completely ignorant of this profound point and looking upon human beings, themselves, as simply one kind of animal, have come to view the human being as only the material substance of the human body, so disease is viewed as damage to the physical body, and the simplistic way of thinking was conceived of trying to repair the physical body with substance such as medicines and instruments. Reality, however, is not so simple. The human being, apart from its physical body, also has vital, life energy, a spiritual individual that exists which is more important than the physical part. This existence has an intimate and inseparable relationship with the physical body by which human beings can live and be active. Because spirit is perceived to be akin to nothing, material science was not able to discover its existence. Material science’s preoccupation with the dissection of corpses and such well illustrates its addiction to study of only the physical. Thus, no matter how much progress is touted, as it is limited to only one side of two aspects, the development of medical science is merely crippled progress that can be described as nothing more than a waste of effort in time and labor.
As just discussed, human beings are composed of two facets, the spiritual and the physical. The spirit is primary and the physical, subordinate, and this is a law that pertains to every thing. In these circumstances, disease occurs when the medicinal toxin in the physical is reflected to the spirit and becomes cloud. Purifying activity generates naturally in spirit, the cloud is dispelled, and this condition, when reflected to the physical, starts to dissolve and eliminate medicinal toxin. The physical elimination process is experienced as what is called pain. In other words, the reflection of toxin to spirit is a function of the horizontal aspect of the unity of spirit and body, and the reflection of cloud to the physical is the vertical aspect of the law that the spirit precedes the physical. It is essential that this point be fully understood.
The essence of cloud is an opaque element that generates on the spirit which is supposed to be colorless and transparent. This opaque element is the true source of disease, which when wiped out and eliminated, will result in recovery from disease. The method for doing so is Johrei which literally means “purifying the cloud on spirit.” Johrei is true healing. Therefore, it should be understood that all other forms of healing therapy are non-healing. The preceding are the fundamental principles of pathology and of therapy, so simply speaking, disease is a surface manifestation of symptoms, with the disease source being the cloud inside. Eliminating this cloud is true healing therapy. Medical science, unaware of these principles, presumes it sufficient that only the symptoms require elimination, so even when the outcome seems to be good, it is only temporary, and the condition will recur, something that all medical doctors are sure to continually experience.
Let’s go a little deeper and look at the fundamental principles of Johrei scientifically. For convenience sake, I will explain aspects of both the theoretical and the experimental sides of Johrei in accordance with the scientific method, because at present that method is held to be the most proper.
Clouds on the spirit are toxified pharmaceuticals whose essence is impure nitrogen, that is, impure spirit of water. Toxic particles mix with spirit of water to make it impure. When these toxic particles have been destroyed, the spirit of water becomes pure, and the pathology is eradicated. This process requires heat of a very high temperature in order to incinerate the toxic particles. This high-temperature heat, what I will call X, has never before existed on the face of the earth, but fortunately something has been discovered that assists in the explanation of X. It is the atom bomb whose heat has not existed till now. That my discovery was made in the twentieth century shares a characteristic in common with the invention of the atomic bomb. Not just a coincidence, this is an expression of God’s will. What differs between the two is that the heat of the atom bomb is a physical heat, and the heat of Johrei is spiritual heat, so it’s strength cannot be compared. In other words, physical heat has its limitations, but spiritual light is of such a high level as to be without limit, so of course material science was unable to discover it. Even if Johrei had been discovered, reproducing it artificially would not have been possible. So even on this one point, Johrei has capabilities incomparable to the atom bomb.
And, whether science can develop so many more times over its present level or if the discovery of Johrei becomes possible on its own is unknown at this time. If so, what forms the essence of Johrei remains the question. Johrei’s essence is that of the sun, and it is composed of light, heat, and spirit. I call this essence, the spirit of fire, and when the spirit of fire is radiated towards impure nitrogen or spirit of water, in an instant only the toxic particles within are incinerated. In other words, the source of disease is burned away completely. This can happen because, unlike physical impurities, spiritual impurities cannot burn without the application of spiritual fire.
To explain how I convey to others the technique for radiating spiritual fire, I write with a brush the ideogram for “light” on a piece of paper that is presented to those who request it. As a focal point, this paper is folded and placed in a packet to be worn around the neck. The spirit of fire, which is eternally and continually being irradiated from the sun, is transmitted through me, to the paper in the packet, from the palm of the hand of those who wear the packet. If the sun were to be considered the broadcast station, I am the relay station, and the Johrei administrator is the receiving set. Through this process, toxic particles are totally destroyed, the spirit of water becomes pure, and the remains are absorbed into serum, and thus disease is completely healed. More simply, when the palm of the hand is focused on a region that is hurting, the pain immediately goes away. The pain goes away because the cloud is extinguished instantly which then reflects onto the physical body. Furthermore, because the toxic particles, whether tuberculin or contagions, are all the sources of germs which are completely eradicated, this method is the ideal healing therapy for treating all diseases.
I do believe the above has for the most part clarified Johrei, but roughly speaking, because medical treatment is a method which solidifies the medicinal toxin that was about to be discharged and Johrei is a method that enables the process of dissolving and elimination, the former is a method for maintaining and preserving disease and the latter is a method for relieving disease. So, viewed impartially, that which cures disease is science and that which does not cure disease is non-science, so I declare that medical science is non-science. A good example of how medical “science” is a non-science are its explanations which are indeed detailed but are minutiae that do not touch on the fundamentals. That its explanations do not accord with reality is something doctors probably recognize. Medical science is akin to studying the branches and leaves of a tree when it is withering, not understanding that the cause of the disease is in the roots.
The preceding is a general survey of pathology and medical science. The point I want to stress is that because the fundamentals are unknown to medical science, it is a low level of science without rationality as opposed to Johrei healing which is a rationally high level of science, a science of the future. This point is underscored by the fact that when the wonderful results of Johrei are seen through the brains of those with a low level of science, the results are taken to be marvelous as if they were miracles. Actually, Johrei results are not miracles at all. It is only natural that when there is a reason that a disease be cured, it is cured. What some people may want to know is why this wonderful power of the spirit of the sun was given so that through me the diseases of billions of persons could be cured, and this is indeed the puzzle of the century. To explain this, however, a profound mystery must be disclosed which I will now explain.

“Jōrei wa Kagaku Ryōhō Nari (1),” the first installment of a pair of essays that bear the same title, separately identified only by “(1)” and “(2),” was published in Eikō, Issue 243, January 13, 1954, too late for inclusion in the essays anthology for ministers Goshinsho: Shūkyō-hen (Divine Writings: Volume on Religion), March 25, 1954. Although no published translations are known to exist, this essay was reprinted in the anthology Igaku Kankei Goronbun Shū (Collected Essays on Medical Science), page 421, that did enjoy a limited circulation. Igaku Kankei Goronbun Shū contains no publication data, but internal evidence suggests that its compilation stopped several months preceding Meishu-sama’s death. Furthermore, since the book contains no publication data, whether the volume had Meishu-sama’s imprimatur or not is unknown, so details concerning this volume are probably impossible to research.
